New Year 2008 and Goals
It’s a little hard for me to believe how 2007 zoomed by. Zoom, zoom, zoom – zipping by us as if we’re on a commuter train without stops, going somewhere important.
Now we are ushering in 2008 – TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT – can you believe that? It just seems like yesterday we were contemplating everything falling apart as the Year 2000 (Y2K anyone?) was ushered in. Now we are going on eight years into 2000.
I remember in 1999 thinking that things should change in 2000; that this was an incredible opportunity to make changes and become what I wanted to. Ugh. I have wasted 7 years working on that premise. Oh, I guess I can’t really say I’ve wasted it but I am not where I want to be yet.
You ask what this has to do with ushering in the year 2008? Plenty! We have an opportunity to set ourselves up to succeed in this coming year, right now. We always look at New Years’ eve as a time to make resolutions and change – and usually fail within 2 weeks after New Years’ day. Everything from losing weight and getting into shape to going back to college, we resolve to do it this time.
I think part of the problem is that we call our list “resolutions” which is another word for promise, pledge, oath, or vow. Since we regularly see those in authority as promise-breakers, it is hard to believe we can keep a promise. And I don’t believe we really understand the words oaths or vows anymore; because of that, this list we write really comes across as not quite real. Thus, we break the list resolutions the first challenge we run up against.
Ah! But call it “goal setting” and more people understand that. This is the catch phrase of this generation and it is a very good one. We are taught that by setting goals, we will reach that goal. We’ve read many a biography of someone who had great success (such as Mary Kay Ash, foundation of Mary Kay products) and attributed it to setting daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and long term goals.
If we don’t write it down, we not only forget what we wanted to do, but it isn’t something valuable to us. If we really believe something is important, we will focus our attention on it. Writing down goals in present tense (“I am a winner” instead of “I will be a winner”), then reading these goals every day keeps the focus on what we want.
I challenge you to set yourself up to succeed this year. It doesn’t matter how many times you failed in the past or how many times you made a resolution then failed at it, again. This is the year of new hope and fresh starts. This is the year you will accomplish every goal you set your focus on. This time, YOU WILL SUCCEED!
There are more in-depth programs available about goal setting and achieving success than what I’m giving you here. I’ll list a couple that I believe are life-changing.
HERE’S TO YOUR SUCCESS – HAPPY NEW YEAR!
